Bratislava: Discovering the Heart of Slovakia for Our Meeting
Bratislava is located in the center of Europe, in the southwest of Slovakia. The borders of Slovakia with Hungary to the south and Austria to the west form the outskirts of the city, making it the only capital city in the world surrounded by two neighboring countries.
Bratislava lies on the banks of the Danube, the second longest river in Europe. The central part of the Danube basin begins at the Devínská gate in the west of Bratislava. The city is part of the Bratislava region, one of the eight into which Slovakia is divided. The city occupies a total area of 367.58 square kilometers.
Known in Roman and Greek history as Istropolis, for Germans as Pressburg, for Hungarians as Pozsony, for Slovaks as Prešporok, and for a short time as Wilson City after the division of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Bratislava only got its current name in 1919. However, the city it has a long and proud history dating back to Celtic culture (around 200 BC). Bratislava is one of the peaks of the so-called of the “golden central European triangle” (the other two are Vienna and Budapest), one of the most promising regions in Europe. For centuries it was the crossroads of two important historical trade routes – the Danube and the Amber Road.
Bratislava was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary for 247 years (1536–1783) and the coronation city for 267 years. In total, 11 kings and queens were crowned in the city, and 8 of their spouses in St. Martin between 1563 and 1830, including Maria Theresa of Austria.
There is a lot to see and experience in the city itself. The magnificent palaces of the Austro-Hungarian noble families who built the palaces adorn the city, and many are now open to the public as museums and galleries. The former residence of the rulers, today the symbol of Bratislava and the seat of the Museum of History – Bratislava Castle – is built on the fortifications of the Celts, Romans and Slavs. The castle was destroyed several times and recently underwent extensive reconstruction. From its 47-meter high Crown Tower and fortifications, there is a great view of the medieval old town and the Danube valley.
Bratislava was once one of the most important centers of Jewish learning in Europe. A unique memorial to its most famous rabbi, the Chatam Sofer, and the Museum of Jewish Culture celebrate this heritage. The monument is often visited by Orthodox pilgrims from all over the world.
On the other side of the river, the unmistakable rows of prefab houses with the unique SNP bridge in the foreground represent the architecture of communist times. The “UFO” itself contains a restaurant of the same name with a bar and an observation deck 95 m above the Danube River with an amazing view of the city and a view up to 100 km away. The river is, of course, one of the main assets of the city. The pedestrian bridges New Bridge and Starý Most are good places to watch the river traffic.
It is no wonder that the Slovak metropolis has some of the best restaurants in the country, from simple traditional dining rooms to sophisticated catering establishments and a varied menu from Slovak to international cuisine. Fresh, fresh pink and white wines from Slovakia have won many awards in international competitions. A look at the varied history of Slovak wines will help the curious taster to appreciate their path to fame.
